Court discharges man accused of manslaughter

An Abuja Chief Magistrates' Court on Monday discharged a man accused of alleged
manslaughter after a formal application by the family of deceased victim to withdraw the matter.

The man, Buhari Haruna, 24, a driver, of Dutse Bokuma, Abuja, was arraigned by the police for causing the death of a man by dangerous driving.

The Chief Magistrate, Hajiya Fati Tafida, struck out the case, adding that the letter of withdrawal of the case by the deceased's family indicated that both families had successfully resolved the matter.

Earlier, the Police Prosecutor, Mr Philip Apollos, had told the court that the accused drove a Mack Truck with registration number, XU 488 ABC in a dangerous manner.

Appollos said that action caused the death of a 63-year-old man, Joe Gbadago, of Ali Akilu Road, Kaduna.
"Haruna drove recklessly along Gwarinpa by- pass, Abuja on April 30 at about 3.30 p.m. and crashed into a Toyota Carina with registration number AU 359 BWR driven by Gbadago, making him sustain severe injury.''
Apollos added that both vehicles got damaged at the accident scene and the victim sustained
fracture on his right leg and right hand as well as a deep injury on his forehead.

The prosecutor said that Gbadago later died at the Gwarinpa General Hospital, Abuja while receiving treatment.
